How to Get Free Music
I know I need to post today--so in lieu of interesting personal observation, a list of places you should go if you have the need for free music files that are also legal.
Label sites are replete with samples. That is, if they're the least bit independent. Don't plan on anything but streaming (if that) from Warner or anyone, but Sub Pop, Jade Tree, Asthmatic Kitty, Barsuk and the like almost always have something for free.
Downloads from C|Net. The search interface sucks, but they have some things from bigger names (and a lot from much smaller). Also PureVolume.
Stereogum. Especially the tribute albums to R.E.M.'s "Automatic for the People" and Radiohead's "OK Computer" (note: you can't actually download the OKX ones anymore, sad), but they have all kinds of crap up all the freaking time. You can also get songs from Pitchfork, but that means you have to read Pitchfork.
You can get cool videos from Blogotheque; the later ones are downloadable.

I found some really good stuff on pitchfork, but it was really hard for me to navigate cause they were speaking all sorts of nutty-ness.
A friend of mine who chooses her indie based on pitchfork had a music conversation with me the other day. I was trying to settle my distaste for the indie scene and then I mentioned my love of The Mars Volta and she said, oh they're indie. I blew up, what? They are not! Yeah they are, they were on pitchfork. Sure enough they were, but Pitchfork didn't give them a rating above a 4 out of 10 and said in their review, if you like indie you won't like The Mars Volta. She didn't read that part.
I second the Asthmatic Kitty. I love that label.
Also, firefox users can get the downloadhelper extension, which lets you download streaming crap.
Also, I was very tempted to omit an R.
ah, steaming crap.
